Why This Topic Matters

Clients with personality disorder features complicate every phase of EMDR in ways standard training doesn't address.

Clinicians with EMDR training know how to target trauma. But clients with personality disorder features regularly stall, destabilize, or rupture the working alliance in ways which are difficult to manage in the therapy room. The standard 8-phase protocol was not designed for clients where the attachment injury isn't a discrete event; it's the organizing principle of how they experience themselves.

  • Case conceptualization that doesn't account for the attachment layer often leads to targets that feel correct but produce limited processing
  • Destabilization can end sessions prematurely when the clinician doesn't have a framework for what's happening structurally
  • Personality disorders are frequently misread as character resistance or treatment non-compliance rather than attachment wounds requiring adaptation
  • Standard protocol pacing without relational and attachment adaptation may produce treatment patterns that plateau or rupture without a clear clinical reason
  • JaCarie Owens's clinical work sits at this intersection: what to do when the wound has become the identity
Who This Training Is For

Designed for licensed clinicians who have completed EMDR Basic Training and work with clients presenting with relational trauma or personality disorder features.

Therapists & Counselors

LPCs, LMHCs, and licensed counselors working in trauma-focused settings or with clients presenting with attachment disruptions and relational trauma.

Social Workers & Psychologists

LISWs, LMSWs, and psychologists working with clients presenting with complex trauma, personality disorder features, or significant attachment wounds.

LMFTs & Other Master-Level Practitioners

LMFTs and master-level mental health practitioners encountering personality disorder features, identity-based relational patterns, or attachment disruptions across the lifespan.

Prerequisite: Completed EMDR Basic Training is required. This is an advanced training that builds directly on the 8-phase protocol. It is not appropriate for clinicians who have not yet been trained in EMDR. If you have completed Basic Training and work with clients who present with personality disorder features, complex relational patterns, or significant attachment wounds, this course was built for your clinical context.
Course Overview

A practice-grounded framework for adapting EMDR's 8-phase protocol to clients where attachment injury is the organizing principle of self, not a single trauma event to target.

This training examines the developmental origins of personality disorders through an attachment lens, tracing how early relational environments shape the patterns clinicians encounter in the treatment room. It covers the connections between attachment disruption, relational trauma, and the presentation of personality disorder features across the lifespan, with attention to how these patterns appear in EMDR processing and what they require from the clinician at each phase.

JaCarie Owens's clinical focus sits at the intersection of attachment trauma and EMDR: culturally responsive, ego-state informed, grounded in years of work across community mental health and private practice. The training moves through two clinical case examples, applying attachment-based EMDR thinking to real presentation patterns and illustrating how the conceptual framework translates into actual clinical decisions.

Topics Covered

  • How early attachment experiences shape emotional regulation, self-concept, and relational patterns from infancy through adulthood
  • Clinical differences between BPD and other personality disorders through the lens of attachment wounds, not diagnostic category alone
  • How EMDR's 8-phase protocol requires adaptation when the primary organizing wound is relational and structural, not event-based
  • The role of parts work, somatic resourcing, and containment in building the stabilization platform this population requires
  • Culturally responsive and trauma-informed frameworks for conceptualizing personality disorders across diverse populations
  • Two clinical case examples using attachment-based EMDR interventions
What You'll Learn

By the End of This Training, You Will Be Able To:

Clinical frameworks for adapting EMDR to clients with personality disorder features, with an attachment-first orientation across all 8 phases.

01

Describe how EMDR's 8-phase protocol can be adapted for clients with personality disorders.

02

Differentiate between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other personality disorders through the lens of attachment wounds.

03

Utilize parts work, somatic resourcing, and containment to promote safety and stabilization.

04

Identify the relationship between early attachment disruptions and the development of personality disorders.

05

Analyze at least two clinical case examples using attachment-based EMDR interventions.

06

Apply culturally responsive and trauma-informed strategies when conceptualizing personality disorders.

Take This Into Your Next Session

Strategies Designed to Apply Starting With Your Next Client

When clinicians have a framework for understanding how attachment wounds shape personality disorder features, they can move beyond symptom-level treatment and engage the structural layer beneath the behavior.

Rather than interpreting personality disorder presentations as treatment resistance or protocol failure, clinicians gain a structured way of understanding what the relational wound requires at each phase — and how to adapt without abandoning the protocol. From attachment-informed case conceptualization to parts work, somatic resourcing, and containment, the strategies in this training are designed to apply in your next session.

Attachment-Focused EMDR Clinician  ·  Complex Trauma and Personality Disorders

JaCarie Owens is a licensed mental health counselor whose clinical practice is grounded in attachment-focused work, complex trauma, and personality disorders. Her approach integrates ego-state work, somatic techniques, mind-body interventions, parts work, and sand tray alongside EMDR, drawing on experience across community mental health, school-based settings, and private practice.

JaCarie's clinical focus sits at the intersection where attachment patterns and personality disorder features meet the EMDR protocol, directly addressing the protocol adaptation questions this population raises for trained clinicians. She is the owner of Courageous Minds Counseling in Clive, Iowa.

What Clinicians Said After the Live Training

Helping me understand how to locate the wound under the behavior and respond interpersonally as a therapist in a way that helps to begin to heal that wound in the client. Really enjoyed the instructor's energy and knowledge.

Licensed Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatry

Looking at these patterns of behavior through an attachment lens facilitates a more informed, empathetic, and effective response to the client.

LMHC

I anticipate feeling more confident and comfortable using interweaves learned in this course. I particularly appreciated the instructor's attachment theory lens and her focus on cultural humility.
