EMDR Basic Training is the 50-hour foundational course required before a licensed clinician can practice EMDR or pursue EMDRIA certification. It combines 40 hours of academic instruction with 10 hours of consultation, and meets every EMDR International Association requirement for an EMDR Basic Training course. What the training includes

50

Hours of complete EMDR training

40 hours of academic instruction plus 10 hours of group consultation, meeting all EMDR International Association requirements for foundational EMDR training. In-person events run 20 hours of didactic instruction and 20 hours of live experiential practice.

CE credits on completion

Awarded after you complete the full 5-day program. Attendance for the entire intensive is required. No partial credit is awarded. Certificates are issued online after you complete the evaluation form.

Months to finish

The full course, including the 10 consultation hours and the 45-question EMDRIA Learner Assessment, must be completed within 12 months of your start date. Consultation hours are scheduled after the academic portion.

Curriculum

What you will learn

The course teaches the foundations of EMDR through lecture, video, demonstration, and supervised practice between participants. You leave with a working command of the Adaptive Information Processing model, the eight phases of EMDR, and the clinical judgment to apply them across a range of presentations. Instruction covers varying applications of bilateral stimulation using a client-centered approach, and how to deliver EMDR in a telehealth environment.

  2. Describe processing mechanisms (BLS, REM, orienting response, and taxing working memory with DAS)
  3. Recognize EMDR as evidence-based practice
  4. Describe the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Approach
  5. Demonstrate stabilization and affect management skills
  6. Demonstrate developing a neural network target sequence plan
  7. Identify ways to explain EMDR to clients
  8. Discuss EMDR client selection criteria
  9. Summarize the use of the Phase 3 Assessment questions before EMDR processing
  10. Demonstrate standard EMDR and adaptations (contained and restricted processing)
  11. Recognize the reevaluation phase as part of treatment integration
  12. Identify three-prong processing (past, present, future)
  13. Identify ways to provide EMDR via telehealth
  14. Recognize modifications to utilize EMDR with children
  15. Recognize ways to use EMDR with couples
  16. Identify EMDR options with recent or crisis events
  17. Demonstrate self-use techniques one may teach a client
  18. Recognize the AIP approach to neurobiology with clients with complex presentations
  19. Summarize front-loading additional resources for use with clients with complex presentations
  20. Identify two or more ways to approach target sequence planning in EMDR
  21. Describe the use of cognitive interweaves during processing
  22. Identify clinical processing interventions to assist in managing client emotions during processing
  23. Recognize ways to help client stay within their window of processing tolerance
  24. Describe phase 8, reevaluation phase of EMDR, and its purpose
  25. Demonstrate three-prong processing (past, present, future)
  26. Discuss EMDR with first responders
  27. Describe modifications for working with dissociative tendencies
  28. Identify the EMDR approach to treating addictions
  29. Recognize the use of EMDR with grief
  30. Explain an EMDR approach to working with phobias
  31. Describe using EMDR with pain
  32. Summarize how to integrate EMDR into one's clinical practice

Eligibility

  • Advanced practice registered nurses with a psychiatric mental health specialization

Beginner level. No prior EMDR experience required.

Licensure requirements

  • Independently licensed clinicians with a master's degree or higher in a mental health field
  • Provisionally or pre-licensed clinicians actively pursuing full licensure while working under an independently licensed supervisor. A supervisor letter is required.
  • Graduate students in a mental health master's or doctoral program who have completed core coursework and are in practicum or internship. First-year graduate students are not eligible. Documentation is required.

Kenya Rocha is a licensed psychotherapist with 18+ years of clinical practice across individual, couple, family, and community mental health settings. She is the Founder and Clinical Director of MOSAIC Family Counseling Center in Urbandale, Iowa, where she maintains an active caseload and leads a clinical team.

An EMDRIA-approved EMDR trainer since 2017, Kenya was named to the inaugural cohort of EMDRIA Approved Trainers when the formal credential launched in 2023, one of roughly 230 worldwide. She has been an EMDRIA Approved Consultant since 2014 and an EMDR Certified Therapist since 2012, and has trained 500+ clinicians nationally and internationally.

Registration, pricing, payment plans, transfers, refunds, and CE support for EMDR Basic Training are handled directly by EMDR Consulting, LLC, not by EMDR & Beyond. Fees vary by event, registration tier, and how far in advance you register, and the 10 required consultation hours are included in the registration fee.

EMDRIA

This course meets all EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) requirements for an EMDR Basic Training course. All EMDR Consulting basic trainers are individually approved by EMDRIA to train for EMDR Consulting.

Continuing Education

Participants will receive 40 hours of continuing education credit upon completing this program. Attendance for the entirety of the 5-day intensive is required to receive CE credits. No partial credit will be awarded.

NBCC

EMDR Consulting has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6853. EMDR Consulting is solely responsible for all aspects of this program.

APA

Continuing education credit for this program is also awarded by CBI Center for Education. CBI is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CBI maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Cognitive Behavior Institute is not responsible to verify that American Psychological Association continuing education credits are approved by an attendee's respective state licensing board.

EMDR Consulting and CBI do not provide CMEs for psychiatrists (MDs).

This training does not offer ASWB ACE credit to social workers.
