Why This Course

Iowa’s supervisor rule includes training in supervision. This is that course.

Under IAC 481-880.7(2), a clinician who supervises candidates for independent licensure as an LMHC, LMFT, or LISW must meet each of the rule’s requirements, and anyone who does not needs board approval before supervision begins. The training requirement is at least a six-hour continuing education course in supervision, or one graduate-level course in supervision. Clinical Supervisor Training in Iowa is the six-hour course.

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL) publishes a list of approved behavioral health supervisors on its behavioral health licensing page. In either format, this course satisfies Iowa’s clinical supervisor training and listing requirements.

What IAC 481-880.7 asks of a supervisor

  • An active Iowa license at the independent level as a social worker, mental health counselor, or marital and family therapist
  • At least three years of independent practice
  • At least a six-hour continuing education course in supervision, or one graduate-level course. This course is the six-hour option.
  • Knowledge of the ethical code and licensing rules that govern the supervisee
  • A written supervision plan on the board’s current form, submitted by the supervisee before supervision begins, and a supervision report when it ends (880.7(3) and (4)). Designing that plan is learning objective 02.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this course qualify me to supervise in Iowa?

It meets the training requirement in Iowa’s supervisor rule, IAC 481-880.7(2): at least a six-hour continuing education course in supervision, or one graduate-level course in supervision. The rule also requires an active Iowa license at the independent level as a social worker, mental health counselor, or marital and family therapist, and knowledge of the ethical code and licensing rules that govern your supervisee. Becoming an Iowa-approved supervisor also requires at least 3 years of independent practice. Anyone who does not meet the rule’s requirements needs board approval before supervision begins. Both formats of this course satisfy Iowa’s clinical supervisor training and listing requirements.

Is the on-demand course equivalent to the live session?

Both formats carry 6 Iowa continuing education hours, and both satisfy Iowa’s clinical supervisor training and listing requirements. The live session is taught in real time, virtually or in person. The credit requirements for each format are listed on its card under Choose your format.

Does this course count toward my license renewal?

Yes, for LMHCs, LMFTs, and LISWs serving in a supervisory role. This course covers the three hours of continuing education in supervision Iowa requires: IAC 481-881.2(10)“b”(2) for LMHCs and LMFTs, and 481-881.2(12)“k” for LISWs.

Does this course carry EMDRIA or APA credit?

No. This is not an EMDR training, and no EMDR background is required. It is open to all licensed clinicians.

I supervise under another state’s license. Does this course apply?
